PINEWOOD DERBY RESULTS

Pack 28 holds the annual Pinewood Derby during the early months of each year.  The Scouts create all sorts of downhill racers from the official block of wood.  Below are the rules to be followed by all participants.  Four racers at a time transverse the downhill in heats that last about 5 seconds each.

After being weighed-in, drivers may make adjustments to bring the overall weight to within the 5 oz. limit by adding or reducing weight. In addition, each car must comply with all dimensional requirements  (see rules 1 below). After making adjustments, re-weigh the car.  When the car is in compliance, the car will be assigned a number and placed into lockup by race officials until race day.  The drivers name, den and rank will be entered into the race schedule in preparation for raceday.

RACE DAY is Sunday February 9, 2003   Huntington United Methodist Church
Doors open at 12:30pm. Racing from 1:00-5:00pm
RACING STARTS AT 1:00pm SHARP. Be on time or you may risk your opportunity to race. Once the racing commences, no one can be added to the racing schedule.
Each scout must have a parent present for the duration. Bring your cameras.

All scouts will race more heats than in past years.

1. All cars must pass an inspection to qualify for the race. The inspection points are as follows:

a. The car must have been made during the current year (the year in which the derby is held).
b. The width of the car shall not exceed 23/4 inches.
c. The length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
d. The height of the car shall not exceed 4 inches.
e. Track clearance under car minimum 3/8 inches.
f. The weight of the car shall not exceed 5 ounces.
g. Axles, wheels, and body wood shall be as provided in the kit. Wheels cannot be shaved. 

 

h. Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.
i. The car shall not ride on any kind or type of springs.
j. Any details added must be within length, width, height and weight limits.
k. The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices.
l. No loose materials of any kind (such as lead shot) are allowed in the car.
m.The official number must be clearly marked or visible on the car and issued by race officials during weigh-in. 

2. Each heat will be announced. Drivers will report to the starting line and place their cars on the track. All other people must remain
    behind the barrier.
3. The starter will make sure the cars are on the track properly while the drivers report to the finish line.
4. The starter will start the race.
5. The car whose nose is over the electronic finish line first is the winner. Second, third and fourth-place winners will also be
     recorded.  All results are tallied by electronic software.
6. If a car leaves the track, runs out of its lane, interferes with another car, loses an axles, etc., the heat will be rerun. If the same car
    gets into trouble on the second run, the contestant is disqualified and automatically loses that heat. If, on the second run, another car
    is interfered with, the heat will be run a third time but without the disqualified car.
7. When the results of each heat are recorded, the drivers will take their cars from the finish line and return them to the pit area and the
     drivers return to their seats.
8. Awards will be announced shortly after the conclusion of all heats. The drivers will report to the winners circle when their names are
    called.
9. There will be awards to be given to the top three drivers. Certificates will be awarded for various categories regarding car designs,
     themes, etc.

There will also be racing among the Den Leaders and any parents that would like to build a racer.  The same rules apply.  The adult races will be conducted separately from those of the scouts but on the same day. The adults can buy a racer kit to build at the Council Office in Derby or Milford but beware that you should go in early as they do sell out fast.
